Promiscuity Gene DRD4 Test

This DNA test detects the “promiscuity” variant of the DRD4 gene. This gene encodes the dopamine receptor D4, which together with dopamine gives us feelings of reward and pleasure. The “promiscuity” variant is found in a repeat region near the DRD4 gene, and the repeat number can range from 2 to 11.

Individuals who inherit the “promiscuity” variant or the 7R+ variants (7r, 8R, 9R, 10R and 11R) produce dopamine receptors that do not bind dopamine as effectively. This means these individuals will need higher levels of dopamine to achieve the pleasurable feelings provided by dopamine. It is possible that people with the “promiscuity” variant take risks or seek novelty to achieve these required high dopamine levels.

How common is the “promiscuity” gene?

The DRD4 4R variant is the most common around the world. Approximately 65% of the population inherit this variant. Variant 7R is the next most common at 20%, followed by the 2R variant at 9%. Other variants are less common, particularly those variants with 8 or more repeats are very rate in the general population (<1%). Frequency of these variants also differ between populations. For instance, the 7R version or the “promiscuity” gene is rare in East Asian and South Asian populations but common in the Americas.
